

I have their other one, the Infinite Jets, and this is like the perfected version of that pedal. If you were gonna get one effects processor as a producer, this might be it. The customisation appears limitless when you consider the other controls, including activity and time control, modulation frequency and depth, and mix. The fourth addition to this list is the Hologram Microcosm, probably my favorite guitar pedal. The pedal also comes equipped with a 60-second looper, along with 16 memory slots for recall of user presets. There is some overlap in the effect types but there are definite differences. The Microcosm has more delivered presets and user presets.

All in one pedal, the options are limitless. Although the IJ loops the sound samples for a short time, it can't be used as a looper with layers and undo etc. The Hologram Electronics Microcosm Granular Pedal is a one-stop-shop for granular effects. The sound can be customised even further, as the pedal also controls pitch modulation, stereo reverb, and a resonant low-pass filter. The 11 effects are grouped into four categories by similarity, so there are three micro loop effects, three granule effects, three glitch effects, and two multi-delay effects. Your mileage may vary, and it can definitely do some cool stuff with Volcas if that's something you see yourself doing a lot of.The range of options available on the Hologram Electronics Microcosm Granular Pedal is truly astonishing, as each of the 11 unique effects offers four preset variations.

That said, it's certainly a fun pedal and I had no problem learning my way around it, but in the end just didn't find it added too much to my setup. Ultimately the Red Panda Tensor took over that spot for glitchy loop stuff and I may eventually try out a Microcosm for the ambient/granular stuff downstream and in stereo. On top of that, while the Old Blood side sounds great, I just didn't really need any of it with plenty of other pedals on my board. So it's a pedal that kind of demands to be played on the fly if you want something more dynamic/less predictable. It's great at what it does but suppose it just wasn't right for me-I found myself wishing I could loop longer phrases (understanding that it's not really meant for that), and didn't love that without MIDI/expression you're fairly limited in terms of ramping (just square and triangle waves at a steady rate). Personally I had a MOOD for a couple months and didn't really get along with it.

Probably have more fun with volcas with a microcosm if you want to do big ambient things. That's probably the biggest difference in terms of outcome when you use them with synths. If I didn't have any reverb or weird factor type things, then I'd pick up the microcosmĮdit, one more thing, mood is great for low fidelity stuff, like "bad reverb sounds" lol clock noise and weird broken tape style aesthetics, while the microcosm is high quality everything like super expansive lush reverbs and delays. If you don't have any other reverbs or delays or effects, then I'd pick up the microcosm because it's an "everything weird in one box" kinda pedal, but I already had some other pedals that covered my reverb, delay, filter, and weird glitchy nonsense, so I kept the mood because it was easier to tweak. It's a bit more expensive, twice the size, and has twice the possible sounds. The algorithms were really cool but I always had to remember what mosaic meant, and then if I was on the mosaic mode, what does that activity knob do, and then what does the 3rd mode of the mosaic setting do with the activity knob. The microcosm also has a gigantic range of sounds and sounds really good, but I found it harder to use since each of the knobs has a secondary control and there's functions hidden behind shift type commands and stuff. There's a huuuuge range of weird sounds you can get out of it and I rarely even touch the dipswitches. It's pretty unique with the sample rate clock control. I've owned both mood and microcosm, sold both but then later bought a mood again and I've kept that around and won't sell it again.
